About this resource

Celebrate Lunar New Year while developing early addition and number skills with this engaging EYFS maths resource. Designed to complement Understanding the World topics, this Lunar New Year themed activity provides children with opportunities to practise counting, combining groups and exploring numbers to 10 in a fun and meaningful context. The resource includes two differentiated addition activities, making it suitable for children working at different stages of their mathematical development. In the first activity, children are asked to add together groups of themed objects to find the total. They can count each object individually to support their understanding and develop confidence with combining two groups. This provides a practical introduction to addition while reinforcing one-to-one correspondence and accurate counting. In the second, more challenging activity, children are presented with a set of objects alongside a number. They need to count the objects and then count on from the given number to find the total. For children who need additional support, counters can be used to represent the given number and help them work out the answer practically. This resource is ideal for use during a Lunar New Year topic, as part of an EYFS maths lesson, in continuous provision, or as an independent activity. The differentiated worksheets allow you to provide an appropriate level of challenge while helping children build their confidence with early addition. The activity supports the following EYFS mathematical objectives: Count objects, actions and sounds. Link the number symbol with its cardinal number value. Explore the composition of numbers to 10. A fun way to combine Lunar New Year, Understanding the World and early mathematical development!Read more

What you get, one file

  • PDFActivity

This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.

★★★ Differentiated three ways
  • Working towardsScaffolded, with the model or the bar already drawn.
  • Working withinThe expected standard for the year group.
  • Greater depthReasoning and explaining, not just more of the same.

Our own system, with the star count repeated in every worksheet header so a child can be handed the right sheet without a word.
