About this resource

Help children develop their understanding of number bonds to 10 with this engaging and practical puzzle activity. Children match the puzzle pieces that combine to make a total of 10, exploring how different numbers can work together to create a whole. To prepare the resource, simply laminate and cut out the puzzle pieces. Ask children to investigate the pieces and find the pairs that make 10 altogether. Encourage them to think of each number as a part and 10 as the whole, supporting their understanding of part-part-whole relationships. Children can use the objects shown on the puzzle pieces to count carefully and check that their two pieces contain 10 objects altogether. This provides a valuable opportunity to develop accurate counting skills while reinforcing the connection between quantities and numbers. The visual nature of the activity also supports subitising, as children become more confident recognising small quantities without needing to count every object. Encourage children to look carefully at the representations and explain how they know that two pieces make 10. This resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 and can be used as part of a focus group, small-group maths activity, independent learning or continuous provision. The puzzle format makes practising number bonds engaging and encourages children to investigate and check their mathematical thinking. Children can practise: Learning number bonds to 10 Finding pairs that make 10 Understanding part-part-whole relationships Recognising quantities within 10 Counting objects accurately Developing subitising skills Matching quantities and numerals Developing early addition skills Explaining mathematical thinking Developing number sense and reasoning Encourage children to explain each combination they find using mathematical language, such as “4 and 6 make 10” or “4 is one part and 6 is the other part. 10 is the whole.” This helps children develop confidence in describing the relationship between the two parRead more
