Help children develop their understanding and recall of subtraction facts to 5 with this engaging animal-themed maths activity. The resource supports children to explore the subtraction number bonds to 5 in a visual and practical way. Children can use the animals to help them solve each subtraction calculation. Ask them to cover or cross out the animals being taken away, then count the animals that remain to find the answer. This provides a clear visual representation of subtraction and helps children understand that when objects are removed from a group, the quantity becomes smaller. It also helps children connect practical subtraction with written calculations. As children become more confident, encourage them to use the pictures less and begin recalling the subtraction facts to 5 mentally. Adult support can help children explain how they know the answer and make connections between related number bonds. Children can practise: Subtraction facts to 5 Number bonds to 5 Counting objects accurately Taking away and finding how many are left Connecting quantities with subtraction calculations Developing early calculation skills Building number sense and mathematical reasoning Developing confidence with mental recall Use the resource as a supported worksheet during a focus group maths activity, or encourage children to use the animals to model the calculations independently. Extend the activity by asking children to represent the same subtraction calculation using counters, cubes or other practical resources. You could also ask, “What would happen if we took away one more?” or “Can you think of the related addition fact?” This practical Early Years and KS1 maths resource provides a simple visual approach to subtraction, helping children build secure foundations in number bonds and develop fluency with subtraction facts within 5.
This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
