Help children develop their understanding of subtraction to 5 with these engaging subtraction stories. The resource provides a simple way for children to explore what happens when objects are taken away and to begin developing recall of subtraction facts within 5. The subtraction stories support children to understand the concept of subtraction by showing that a quantity gets smaller when items are removed. Talk through each story with the children and encourage them to visualise what is happening. For example, you could say, “First there were 5 apples on the tree. Then 2 apples fell off. Now there are 3 apples left.” Children can use the pictures and story to understand the subtraction calculation and connect the practical situation to the mathematical number sentence. Encourage children to count the starting quantity, count how many are removed and then work out how many are left. Repeatedly exploring these subtraction stories can help children become more confident with subtraction facts within 5 and develop early calculation skills. The resource can be used as a worksheet for independent or supported learning. Alternatively, laminate the pages and cut them into individual subtraction stories to create a reusable practical resource for a focus group, maths intervention or continuous provision. Children can practise: Understanding the concept of subtraction Subtracting numbers within 5 Counting quantities accurately Understanding that quantities get smaller when objects are removed Finding how many are left Developing recall of subtraction facts Connecting subtraction stories with mathematical calculations Using mathematical language such as take away, subtract, left and fewer Use the stories as a starting point for practical subtraction activities. Children could recreate each story using counters, cubes or small objects before recording the corresponding subtraction calculation. Adult questioning can further develop mathematical reasoning. This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
