Develop early logic, reasoning and problem-solving skills with this engaging Remembrance-themed picture-based puzzle for Year 1. Designed to encourage children to think systematically, this activity uses familiar pictures and simple rules to help children work out which picture belongs in each empty space. Children are encouraged to carefully examine each row and column and decide which picture is missing. Each picture can only appear once in each row and once in each column, requiring children to look for patterns, use clues and apply logical reasoning to solve the puzzle. This Year 1 logic puzzle is a fun way to encourage children to explain their mathematical thinking. Challenge them to use simple reasoning sentences such as, “I know this picture goes here because…” or “It cannot be this picture because…”. Children can also be encouraged to check their completed puzzle carefully to make sure that all of the rules have been followed and that no picture has been repeated in a row or column. Skills supported include: Logical reasoning Problem-solving Systematic thinking Pattern recognition Picture recognition and matching Attention to detail Explaining mathematical thinking Checking and evaluating solutions Working independently This activity is particularly suitable for Year 1 children who are confident recognising pictures and are beginning to use logical reasoning to solve problems independently. The puzzle can be used as an independent classroom activity, a small-group reasoning task, a maths challenge or as part of a Remembrance-themed lesson. Can the children solve the puzzle, explain their reasoning and check that every rule has been followed?
This pack is print and go. Our catalogue does not list an editable copy of it, so none is offered here rather than promising a file nobody has opened. Page counts are not printed either, because we do not publish them and a guessed number is worse than none.
