Help children develop their spatial reasoning skills with this practical shape matching maths activity. Children select, rotate and manipulate coloured shapes as they work out how they can be positioned to match the white shape spaces. Children begin by carefully cutting out the coloured shapes, providing an additional opportunity to develop their fine motor and scissor skills. They then need to rotate and manipulate each shape until they find the correct orientation to match the corresponding white shape. Once they have found the correct position, children can stick the coloured shapes onto the white shapes. This provides a simple and engaging way for children to explore how shapes can be moved and rotated while developing their spatial awareness. Alternatively, the resource can be laminated and reused. The coloured shapes can be cut out and children can repeatedly match them to the corresponding shape spaces without sticking them down. This activity is ideal for Early Years and KS1, supporting children to develop important spatial reasoning and shape skills through practical exploration. It encourages children to look carefully at shapes and visualise how they need to be turned or moved to fit. Children can practise: Developing spatial reasoning skills Recognising and matching shapes Rotating and manipulating shapes Understanding shape orientation Developing visualisation skills Developing fine motor and scissor skills Problem-solving Using mathematical language Encourage children to describe what they are doing using mathematical vocabulary such as turn, rotate, move, fit, side, corner, shape and position. Ask questions such as “What happens if you turn the shape?”, “Which way does it need to face?” and “How do you know it is the correct shape?” The activity can be used as a teacher-led focus group, as an independent maths task or as part of continuous provision. The laminated version is particularly useful for a maths or shape area where children can revisit the
