About this resource

Help your EYFS pupils deepen their number sense with this interactive Maths Resource Pack, focusing on conceptual subitising. While perceptual subitising is recognising small numbers of objects instantly, conceptual subitising is the ability to see larger groups as smaller, structured parts (for example, seeing 6 as “3 and 3” or “2 and 4”). This pack introduces children to conceptual subitising through engaging teaching slides and practical activities. Pupils are encouraged to look at groups of dots or objects, identify smaller patterns within them, and quickly determine the total without counting one by one. By exploring examples such as “4 as 2 and 2” or “5 as 3 and 2,” children learn to recognise number bonds, strengthen part–whole understanding, and build fluency that supports addition and early calculation skills. A plenary session allows children to show quantities on their fingers or explain how they saw a number, reinforcing flexible thinking about numbers. What’s Included in the Pack? ✔ Teaching slides introducing conceptual subitising with dots and objects ✔ Guided activities encouraging children to spot groups within groups ✔ Starters using finger patterns to show part–whole understanding ✔ Independent exploration tasks with picture cards and classroom objects ✔ A plenary recap to share strategies and consolidate learning Why Teachers Love This Pack: ✔ Aligned with EYFS Statutory Framework for early maths ✔ Builds strong foundations for number bonds and calculation ✔ Hands-on, visual, and engaging—no worksheets required ✔ Flexible for whole-class teaching, small groups, or continuous provision Curriculum Links: This pack supports the EYFS Statutory Framework for Mathematics by helping children: ✔ Subitise groups of objects by recognising smaller patterns within them ✔ Develop part–whole understanding and early number bonds ✔ Build fluency and flexibility in early number recognition Whether you’re introducing subitising for the first time or extending chilRead more
