About this resource

Help children develop their understanding of number bonds to 5 with this fun and practical parking spaces maths activity. Children use red and blue cars to explore the different ways that 5 can be made from two parts. To prepare the activity, laminate and cut out the parking spaces into strips of 5, then laminate and cut out the individual cars. Ask children to fill each set of 5 parking spaces using a combination of red and blue cars, encouraging them to find as many different combinations as possible. This hands-on activity provides a clear visual representation of number composition and part-part-whole relationships. Children can physically move the cars around and see how the whole number 5 can be split into two different parts. Encourage children to explain what they have discovered using mathematical language. For example, they might say “3 red cars and 2 blue cars make 5 cars altogether.” This helps children connect practical representations with spoken mathematical sentences and strengthens their understanding of number bonds. This resource is ideal for Early Years and KS1 and can be used as a focus group activity, independent maths task or part of continuous classroom provision. Children can also be encouraged to record the different combinations they find, providing an opportunity to develop early mathematical recording skills. Children can practise: Learning number bonds to 5 Finding different ways to make 5 Exploring number composition Understanding part-part-whole relationships Counting accurately Recognising quantities within 5 Developing early addition skills Using mathematical language Explaining mathematical thinking Recording number bond combinations Encourage children to find the combinations systematically so that they can check whether they have discovered them all. You could ask questions such as “What happens if you add one more red car?”, “How many blue cars do you need now?” and “Can you find another way to make 5?” The activity can also be Read more
